Dr. Leena Kamat is a clinician with excellent medical knowledge who also possesses the people skills and sensitivity to meet the needs of her patients. This makes her an exemplary family physician.
She grew up in Canada near Toronto, and graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2002, with an Honors Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree and graduated at the top of her class. From there it was the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, graduating from there in 2005. It has consistently been one of the top rated medical schools in the world and has been ranked at the very top in Canada. The school invented PBL, or problem-based learning, a curriculum featuring small groups in case-based scenarios. She went on to do her residency in Family Medicine at McMaster, where she was chief resident in her final year of residency (2007).
It was at McMaster’s School of Medicine that she was trained in Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM), which is her healthcare philosophy at San Ramon Valley Family Medicine today. This approach is essentially the judicious integration of clinical findings with the external evidence from the patient through examination and observation.
Dr. Kamat put her education and developing skills to use in remote areas of Ontario, Canada for a few years, subsequently moving to the United States where she worked at a community health center in Danbury, CT, for almost five years. She then moved to San Ramon in 2016, with her family. These experiences have allowed Dr Kamat to work with a wide variety of patients, from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, who hold a variety of believes and values when it comes to health care. This wide range of experience makes her eminently suited for a family medicine practice in the San Ramon Valley area, with its ever changing demographics.
She took over her current practice, San Ramon Valley Family Medicine, in May of 2017, where she is the sole physician with a small staff. There is room for other providers as the practice grows, but she is excited and motivated by the challenge in her inaugural year as a family physician with her own practice. She is looking forward to diversifying the ages of the patient base to include children (pediatrics) and adults of all ages.
She is a firm believer in the effectiveness of family medicine for primary and preventative care. The modern family unit is comprised of two generations— parents and children— but three generations is also fairly common. Dr. Kamat is dedicated to all ages.
Dr. Leena Kamat lives with her husband, Raj, and their two sons in San Ramon. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors and exploring and enjoying all that the Bay Area has to offer.
Elizabeth is the Office Manager in our practice. She began her career as a medical assistant 34 years ago. Elizabeth had worked with the previous doctor at this practice for 4 years before joining Dr Kamat in May 2017.
She and her husband live in Pleasanton. They have two adult daughters who live in San Francisco. They are also raising their 7 year old niece. She enjoys scrabble and crossword puzzles in her spare time. Elizabeth also enjoys weekend getaways to the beach as often as possible.
